In the 1920-1930s, wrote for Rostov newspapers. After the arrest of her husband Vakhtin, moved to Leningrad, 1935. Became a well-known official writer (2 Stalin Prizes).
Later wrote novels characteristic of the Khrushchev thaw period (Vremena Goda, Sentimentalnyi Roman). Keeping in favour with the authorities, helped her second husband, Dar, and her son B. Vakhtin, who were involved in the human rights movement.
