Verena Stefan was born on October 3, 1947 in Bern, Canton of Bern, Switzerland.
Verena Stefan moved to Berlin in 1968 to become a physical therapist and study sociology at the Free University of Berlin.
Verena Stefan worked as a physical therapist until 1977. She also taught women’s studies and was a co-founder of Brot Rosen, a women’s health collective, in Berlin, circa 1969.
Her first book "Häutungen" ("Shedding") (1975) was based on her experiences while living in Berlin. That book was a bestseller worthy of critical attention as well as popular acclaim. Even though it was released by a small publisher, “Hautungen” sold 135,000 copies. It has since been translated into eight languages.
Her other works included "Rough, Wild and Free", a collection of comparative essays on the figure of the girl in literature.
In 1980, she published a book of poems "Mit Füßen, mit Flügeln" ("With feet, with wings"). With Gabriele Meixner, she has published German translations of "Dream of a Common Language" by Adrienne Rich and "Lesbian Peoples" by Monique Wittig.
She has also published essays on writing for Die Zeit and Frauenoffensive.

1994Verena Stefan was a feminist writer. Remaining active in the women’s movement since the publication of "Shedding", Stefan has continued to write and has translated works by other feminist writers, such as authors Adrienne Rich and Monique Wittig.
Verena Stefan lived together with Lise Moisan.
