Verner Mitchell was born on October 9, 1957, in Thomasville, Georgia, United States; the son of W. J., Sr. and Mary F. Mitchell.
In 1979 Verner Mitchell received a Bachelor of Science from US Air Force Academy. Six years later he got a Master of Arts from Colorado State University. Verner also holds a Doctor of Philosophy from Rutgers University.
Mitchell began his career as a career officer at U.S. Air Force in 1979, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1999. In 1985 Verner was appointed as an instructor, and then as an associate professor at Air Force Academy.
Currently, Verner D. Mitchell is a professor of English at the University of Memphis. He is the editor of This Waiting for Love: Helene Johnson, Poet of the Harlem Renaissance and co-author of four subsequent books on women writers of the Harlem Renaissance. His work has appeared in Studies in American Culture, African American Review, American Literary History, and other journals.
