(The Charles Men tells of the fall of the Swedish empire, ...)
The Charles Men tells of the fall of the Swedish empire, the desperate conditions of an inflexible ruler for what he believed to be true and right, the boundless suffering of an ill-fated people, the ravages of hunger which they endured their inevitable ruin and eternal glory. This unique work has been called a poem in prose and also a hymn on the beauty of Sweden's destruction under King Charles XII. Verner von Heidenstam (1859-1940) was the 1916 Nobel Laureate in Literature in recognition of his significance as the leading representative of a new era in Swedish literature.

Verner von Heidenstam, full name Carl Gustaf Verner von Heidenstam, was born on July 6, 1859 in Olshammar. He was the only child of a noble family.
He attended school in Stockholm, but his health was not good, and he went to Italy and the Orient and spent ten years abroad.
Although he never studied at a university, he managed to acquire a good literary education through his own efforts.
He planned to make a career as an artist, his sense of color and his ability to see life with an artistic eye became a genuine asset for his poetry. His first collection of poems, "Vallfart och vandringårvandringar" (1888) ("Pilgrimages and Years of Wandering"), made him at once the foremost representative of the opposition to the naturalism of the 1880's. In the novel "Endymion" (1889), he published a foreword in which he expressed the naturalistic ideas of the period, but he also published a pamphlet, "Renaissance" (1889), in which he insisted that the course of literary history had passed beyond naturalism. "The satire Pepitas bröllopbrollop" (1890) ("Pepita's Wedding"), which Heidenstam wrote in cooperation with Oscar Levertin, marked the death of naturalism as a dominating literary program in Sweden, and thenceforth it was easier for authors such as Levertin, Gustaf Fröding, and Selma Lagerlöf to develop their own individualism. Heidenstam tried to carry out his literary program in his novel Hans Alenius, parts of which are written in poetic form. To some extent it is reminiscent of Goethe's Faust, which seems to have been one of his sources of inspiration. From a literary point of view, his "Dikter" (1895) ("Poems"), in which the young poet who broke with the old naturalism has developed into a mature man, is still more important. Idealism and a profound nationalism characterized his historical novels: "Karolinerna I-II" (1897 - 1898) (English translation The Charles Men, 1920); "Heliga Birgittas pilgrimsfärdpilgrimsfard" (1901) ("St. Birgitta's Pilgrimage"); "Folkungsträdet" (1905 - 1907) (The Tree of the Folkungs, 1905); "Svenskarna och deras hövdingarhovdingar" (1908 - 1910) (English translation The Swedes and Their Chieftains, 1925).
In 1915 he published "Nya dikter" ("New Poems"), in which he expressed a religious humanism and a noble resignation.
Some of his poems are translated into English: "Verner von Heidenstam, Sweden's laureate: Selected Poems" (1919).
Verner von Heidenstam became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1912 and received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1916.
His collected works were published in Stockholm in 15 volumes between 1909 and 1923.
His poems and prose work are filled with a great joy of life, sometimes imbued with a love of Swedish history and scenery, particularly its physical aspects.
