Vernon Fred was born on November 25, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. He was the son of Howard Melvin and Violet Charlotte (Stalker) Snow.
Vernon studied at Wheaton College and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1948. He also studied at the University of Chicago and finished it with a Master of Arts in 1949. He got a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin in 1953.
Vernon served at United States Army during 1943-1946.
He began to work as an assistant professor history at the University of Oregon, Eugene during 1953-1960. He was an associate professor at the University of Montana, Missoula during 1960-1966. During next 8 years he was a professor of English history at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Since 1974 he worked at Syracuse University, New York. Snow put his knowledge of philanthrophy to work in the classroom and designed a course on the topic while teaching at Syracuse.
In 1974 he became a research fellow at Yale University, New Haven.
He died of cancer on June 24, 1998, in Jamesville.

1974Vernon was a member of American History Association, American Society Legal History and others.
On June 17, 1949 Vernon married Emily Jean Wry, later, they divorced. On November 19, 1982 he married Patricia Boyle. He had a child, Jonathan Lawrence.
