Miller clerked for Minnesota-native Pierce Butler of the United States Supreme Court. He then spent a post-graduate year at Yale Law School during the heyday of the legal realism movement. In the fall of 1931 he joined the Marquette Law School faculty as a full professor. Miller eventually moved to Washington D.C. to become Dean of Catholic University Law School.
