Vesna A. Wallace was born on November 2, 1952, in Osijek, Croatia. She is a daughter of Mirko Lazic and Slavica Acimovic.
In 1979, Vesna received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Zagreb, Croatia. Later, she continued her education at the University of Washington, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in 1988. In 1995, Wallace attained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1987, Vesna began her career as an instructor at the University of Washington, in Seattle, a post she held till 1988. In 1990, she worked as a teaching assistant at the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1991, Vesna began working as a lecturer at Stanford University, a post she held till 1995, when she was appointed a research fellow at the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where she remained until 1996. Between 1996 and 1997, Vesna served as a visiting scholar at the same department.
In 1997, Wallace was appointed a lecturer at the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, a post she held till 2001, when she was made an assistant professor at the same department. Wallace continued to hold the position till 2005, when she was promoted to the post of an associate professor at that department.
Between 2008 and 2010, Wallace acted as an academic director at Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies. During the same period, she worked as a professor and Yehan Numata Chair in Buddhist Studies at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford.
Currently, Vesna is a Professor Emeritus of Buddhist Studies at the University of Oxford.
Vesna A. Wallace is an accomplished Buddhist scholar, educator, translator and author of several writings. She received many awards, including the American Academy of Religion Western Region’s Award for the best student paper "Courtesans in the Context of Buddist Dharma" in 1992, Humanities and Arts Research Grant in June 2002, National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship and others.
