In 1930, Gerasimenko graduated from the art studio in Khorol, Poltava region (Tatishchev's course).
In 1931, he started his creative career in Krasnodar. Gerasimenko worked in the theaters in Sverdlovsk and Smolensk.
In 1938-1947, he was an artist of the Voronezh Drama Theater. From 1947, Gerasimenko was the chief artist of the Gorky Drama Theater. From 1963, he also became the director of the theater.
Gerasimenko designed about 20 performances: "The guy from our city", "The Kremlin chimes", "Woe from Wit", "The Breach", "The Cherry Orchard", "Hamlet", "The Gardens Bloom", "The Conspiracy", "Field Marshal Kutuzov" "The Marriage of Figaro", "The Liar", "Mashenka", "Soldiers of Stalingrad" and many others. In the season of 1957-1958 he designed the performance "Ivan Budantsev" in Voronezh.
