He graduated from the Philological Faculty of Voronezh State University (1966).
He worked as a collective farm tractor driver (1957-1958), served in the Soviet Army (1958-1961). Teacher, associate professor of the Voronezh State Pedagogical Institute (1969-1974). Since 1974, Associate Professor, Professor of the Philological Faculty of Voronezh State University; Dean of the Faculty (since 1988), Head of the Department of Theory of Literature and Folklore (since 1991).
