1918-1922 studied at History and Philology Faculty, Tomsk University. 1925 graduate Socio-Pedagogical Department, Moscow University.
From 1929 taught at higher educational establishments in Moscow: Institute of Advanced Pedagogical Training, Library Institute of Moscow University, Etc. From 1934 also worked for USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1936 senior associate, then learned secretary, Institute of History, USSR Academy of Sciences.
1941-1945 served with Workers’ Battalion of Moscow’s Kiev Rayon, then in Soviet Army at the front. From 1945 deputy director, Institute of History, USSR Academy of Sciences. 1949-1967 director, Fundamental Library of Social Sciences, USSR Academy of Sciences.
From 1959 deputy acad secretary. Department of History, USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1965 also chairman, Archeological Commission, USSR Academy of Sciences and ed of the Commission’s yearbook.

Then coordinating ed, periodical Alaterialy po istorii Sibiri (Material on the History of Siberia). Joint chief ed, 5-volume Jstoriya Sibiri (The History of Siberia). Specialized in Siberian history.
