1911-1916 studied at History and Philology Faculty, Moscow University. 1911 — 15 also studied at Economy Department, Moscow Business Institute. Studied 11 foreign languages.
After graduate Moscow University worked for zemstvo statistical department, cooperative system and Main Polit Education Board. From 1921 taught at Sverdlov Communist University, then at Moscow University, Moscow Oblast and City Teachers’ Training Institutes, Moscow Historical Archives Institute and other higher educational establishments. From 1946 at Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
From 1962 head, Historical Geography Group, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences, working on a historical atlas of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. 1958 co-founder, Inter-Republic Symposium for Agrarian History of Eastern Europe. Deputy chairman, Sciences Council on the Genesis of Capitalism, Department of Historical Sciences, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Deputy chairman, Commission of the History of Agric and Peasantry, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Chairman, Department of the History of Geographical Knowledge and Historical Geography, Moscow Branch, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Geographical Social. Member, editorial board, journal “Istoriya USSR”.
Attended numerous international history congresses and conferences. Helped compile maps, diagrams and tables showing trends in the economics geography and economics history of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.
