Kriz began working in photography before receiving a university education. He attended the School of Graphic Arts in Prague, Czech Republic, and studied with Jaromir Funke, Josef Ehm, and Frantisek Drtikol.
Living in Paris, France from 1946 to 1952, Vilem attended the Ecole Cinématographique et Photographique, worked with Jean Cocteau, and was associated with many other artists. When in Prague and in Paris Vilem was active in the Surrealist movement. Since then his photography has remained rooted in a Surrealist sensibility. In 1952 he moved to the United States and, was teaching Surrealism and photography at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
