Viola Ruth Gates was born on October 13, 1931 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. She was the daughter of Howard Bennett, a baker and restaurateur, and Elsie (Lynch) Bennett, a homemaker and restaurateur. She had a sister and half-brother.
Education
Viola Gates attended University of Denver from 1959 to 1960. She received an Associate degree from the University of Chicago in 1964 and 1968. Gates attended University of Colorado from 1981 to 1983.
Viola Gates worked as a private piano teacher from 1961 to 1985. She was a piano teacher at the Brico Studios in Denver, Colorado from 1970 to 1982. Gates served as a piano teacher at the Hamilton Middle School in Denver from 1983 to 1985. She was a piano teacher at the Englewood Christian school in Englewood, Colorado from 1983 to 1985. Gates also worked as Church organist, pianist, and choral director. She was a secretary at the Brico Symphony Guild. She wrote the book "Snow Storm" (1990) and was a contributor to the "Winning works" (1992).
Viola Gates was a member of the National Writers Association, of the West Wind Writers, of the Colorado State Music Teachers Association, and of the Denver Area Music Teachers.

Viola Gates was a big-hearted woman, who loved her roles as wife, mother and homemaker. She derived much joy from simply being together with family. Gates also possessed a keen mind and creative writing ability.
