"Adamant and Stone Chips, A Christian Humanist Approach to Knowledge" by Virginia Mollenkott is a book that speaks directly and honestly to the problem of the cultural lag characteristic of many evangelicals today. Dr. Mollenkott writes out of a sound background in English literature. She has read the modern writers and has the courage to face what they are saying. Hers is a happy combination of competence in English literature and commitment to the Bible and the evangelical faith. She writes clearly and incisively and her book should be a needed corrective to the provincial outlook toward culture that is manifest in some areas of evangelical life today. While not all who share Dr. Mollenkott's concerns will agree with all of her critical judgments, this is nevertheless a refreshing book and on that needed to be written. Frank E. Gaeblein, Headmaster Emeritus, Stony Brook School

This book bridges traditional religious doctrine and secular postmodern theory regarding gender. Through an examination of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures and church history as well as the exploration of other religious traditions and cultures, Mollenkott honors the experience of people who do not fit within the traditional binary concept of gender: intersexual, trans-sexual, or otherwise-gendered individuals.
