In 1945 he finished three classes of elementary schools of the city of Krasnouralsk. In 1953 he graduated from secondary school №9 named after Nikolay Ostrovsky (Sochi) with a gold medal. In 1959 he graduated from the Ordzhonikidze Moscow Aviation Institute, received a diploma of a mechanical engineer in aircraft construction. In 1958 his scientific work on the theme return of the winged apparatus from the orbit of the satellite to Earth was awarded at the Moscow city review of scientific works. In 1964 he finished the post-graduate study of the school No.102 of MAI. April 1965 he defended his thesis in MAI and received the degree of candidate of technical Sciences. In 1966 he graduated from the course of the University of Marxism-Leninism at the Moscow city by Committee of the CPSU, evening Department.
From September 16, 1958 while studying at the university he began to work as a part-time technician of the 9th department of OKB-1, and from April 9, 1959 he worked as an engineer (since January 15, 1964 - senior engineer) of the 9th department of OKB-1. 1960 - 1963 he read a course of lectures in mechanics of space flight to the cosmonauts of the CPC From July 11, 1964 - worked as an acting head of the group, and from November 11, 1964 – the chief of the group of the 90th department. August 2, 1966 - was appointed head of the sector of the department No. 731 (flight test department) of the Central design engineering bureau of the experimental mechanical engineering (TsKBEM). In the 1970s - 1980s - was the host of the television program "Man.Earth.Universe". May 27, 1968 by order of MOM №163 was enlisted in the detachment of cosmonauts No.731 of the Central desig engineering bureau of the experimental mechanical engineering (TsKBEM). Since July 3, 1970 - instructor, test pilotof the same department.
The first flight - 1-19 July 1970 as a flight engineer of the Soyuz-9 spacecraft together with Andriyan Nikolayev. The crew set a new world record for the duration of the flight. Flight duration: 17 days 16 hours 58 minutes 55 seconds. Call sign: "Falcon-2 ". The second flight - May 24 - July 26, 1975 as a flight engineer of the Soyuz-18 spacecraft and the the long-term orbital station "Salute-4" (DOS-4) together with Peter Klimuk. Flight duration: 62 days 23 hours 20 minutes 08 seconds. Call sign: "Kavkaz-2 ". 30 Dec 1993 - dismissed from The Scientific Production Association “Energy” and the cosmonauts detachment.
