Captain of a Soviet fishing trawler. In 1941, joined the Soviet merchant fleet. Docked at various foreign ports, including some in the USA. In 1945, arrested and accused of espionage, but managed to prove his innocence, and received a sentence of only 3 years on probation.
In 1952, after an accident at Kherson Dry Docks, accused of sabotage, but acquitted after an 8- month investigation. Continued to captain fishing trawlers. In 1975, defected in Sweden.
His memoirs, Poslednii Reis, were published in West Germany in 1982. Has written studies of the ecologically disastrous working methods of the Soviet industrial fishing fleets.
