Sent as an army instructor to Montenegro, 1910-1913. On active service during World War I. Lieutenant-general, 1917. During the Civil War, military specialist and commander with the Red Army against Denikin.
Took part as a military expert in the peace negotiations with Finland and Poland. Editor of the theoretical military journal, Voennaia mysr, 1921-1926, and lecturer in military establishments. Retired in 1934.
