Vladimir Leonidovich Kalashnikov is a Belarusian physicist and researcher known for theoretical and applied work in nonlinear optics, ultrafast laser physics, dissipative solitons, laser dynamics, and related mathematical models. He has held research and teaching positions in Belarus, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Norway.
Background
Vladimir Leonidovich Kalashnikov was born on April 7, 1965, and is associated with Belarus. His professional formation developed through physics and mathematics, with an early specialization in laser optics and subsequent research focused on nonlinear optical and laser systems.
Education
Kalashnikov studied at Belarusian State University in Minsk. He completed an honours program in physics and mathematics in 1989, qualifying as a physicist-researcher in theoretical physics. In 1992 he completed doctoral research in physics and mathematics with a specialization in laser optics; his thesis was titled “Mode-locking efficiency of broadband solid-state lasers.”
Career
Kalashnikov began his research career in 1989 at the Institute for Applied Physics Problems in Minsk, first as a junior researcher in the Laboratory of Semiconductor Physics and then, from 1992 to 1993, as a senior researcher. From 1993 to 1996 he served as scientific secretary of the International Laser Centre in Minsk. In 1996 he was a DAAD fellow at the Institute for Laser and Plasma Physics at the University of Essen in Germany. He subsequently combined research and teaching in Belarus, working as a lecturer in the Laser Technology Department of Belarusian University of Technology and as head of a laboratory associated with laser optics. From 2001 to 2014 he was a senior research fellow at the Institute of Photonics of Vienna University of Technology. He was a Marie Curie senior research fellow at Aston University in Birmingham from 2014 to 2016, returned to Vienna University of Technology as a senior research fellow from 2016 to 2019, and worked as a Marie Curie professor in the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications at Sapienza University of Rome from 2019 to 2021. Since 2022 he has been a researcher in the Department of Physics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. His research has addressed ultrafast nonlinear optics, mode-locked and chirped-pulse lasers, dissipative solitons, nonlinear dynamics, chaos, stochastic systems, general relativity, and quantum cosmology.
