From 1887 associate professor, Moscow University. 1890 established the basic law governing the relationship between the composition of a burning gas mixture and the motion of the combustion front and laid the foundations of the theory of explosive combustion.
1894—1927 professor of physics and meteorology, Petrov-Razumovskiy (now Timiryazev) Agric Academy. 1899 calculated the Doppler effect of light passing through a medium with a varying refraction index. Director of an observatory, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
In latter years did research on actinometry and meteorology.
