Amateur actor and critic from the 1870s. Started to write novels and plays under the influence of A. Chekhov. With K. Stanislavskii, founded and directed the Moscow Arts Theatre (MKHAT), 1898.
Reformer of the art of acting. Made an important contribution to Soviet drama by producing Russian classical works and works by Soviet playwrights. Organized an operatic school within MKHAT, which was later renamed the Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Drama Theatre.
His aim was to train artists to be both singers and actors. In the comic operas which he produced between 1920-1932, his goal was to subordinate the dance to the character of the production and make it an organic part of the action. Directors of dance and music with whom he worked included V. Burmeister, V. Lopukhov and N. Gian.
Took part in a production of Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre. 1920. Helped the choreographer A. Gorskii to achieve' a logical sequence in choreographic action. The Ballet Collective of the Moscow Art Ballet was amalgamated with the Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Drama Theatre in 1939.
Remained until his death closely connected with MKHAT. Starting as a theatre reformer, towards the end of his life he became a conservative influence during the years of Stalinist control of the arts. Many official honours.
