Home. Officer in the Russian Imperial Life Guards, 1874-1881. Resigned tne service as Captain. Lived on family estates in south of Russia as magistrate, member of local self-government councils, organiser of schools and self-help among the peasants.
Founded the publishing enterprise called Posrednik for the dissemination of the best literature amongst the people. Published and circulated private editions of Leo Tolstoy’s works prohibited by the Government. Collected and published information about the persecution of the Sectarians by the Government.
Participated in the publication of an appeal to the Russian ublic on behalf of the Doukhobor sect, then eing exterminated by the Government, for which exiled from Russia by order of the Tsar, 1897. Since then settled down in England. Editor of The Free Age Press (Russian and English branches); Leo Tolstoy’s only literary representative outside of Russia; author and lecturer.
