Studied at the Taganrog Music School from 1916, then at the Rostov Conservatory, 1922-1927.
Taught theory at the Music School. Late 1929, after completing military service, moved to Moscow and did radio work, conducted a local orchestra and wrote music for radio shows. From 1931 artistic director (together with I.M. Kaz’ministry), Pyatnitskiy Russian Folk Choir. Wrote many works and folk song arrangements for this choir. His most important work was influenced by choral music and was almost entirely centred on song.
