In 1959 upon graduating from Secondary school he entered Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University.
In 1959 he became an apprentice of a machine man at "GAZ" factory, where he worked till 1960. Upon finishing the education and receiving the diploma he was allocated to "GAZ" factory to be the foreman of a press shop.
At the conference of the labor collective on December 20, 1988, Kadannikov was elected Director-General of the Volga Association (VAZ), engaged in production of passenger cars.
From 1989 to 1991 he was People's Deputy of the Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR.
During the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt (also known as the August Coup) he occupied the post of Director-General of the production association of "VAZ". There he called for the labor collective of the plant to remain calm. On August 24, after the defeat of the Emergency Committee, he, together with S.F. Zhilkin and N.Yu. Brusnikin, who were Chairman of the Avtozavodsky Regional Executive Committee and the Chairman of the Regional Council of People’s Deputies of Avtozavodsky region accordingly made a joint official application for withdrawal from the members of the CPSU.
On April 29, 1995 he participated in the organization of pre-election meeting of the party "Our Home - Russia" (Наш дом – Россия).
From 1993 to 1996 he was Director-General – Chairman of the board of Directors of OJSC "AVTOVAZ". In 1994 Kadannikov became Director-General – President of OJSC "AVTOVAZ".
In 1996 he was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.
In November 1996, Vladimir Kadannikov was re-elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of OJSC "AVTOVAZ". In August 2001, he was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of joint venture "GM-AvtoVAZ".
From 1996 to 2005 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of OJSC “AVTOVAZ” and from 2001 to 2005 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of "GM-AvtoVAZ". In 2005, the plant owners give up their ownership and the plant became the property of Rosoboronexport. On October 27, Vladimir Kadannikov left the post of Chairman of the Board of Directors of OJSC "AVTOVAZ" with the official statement "due to retirement", from that time on he lives in Moscow.
From 1994 to 2012 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of OJSC "National Trade Bank" (NTB), which was sold to OJSC "GLOBEX Bank" where, till 2017, among the members of the Board of Directors was Vladimir Kodannikov.
