1924 graduate Leningrad University. 1928 graduate Naval Academy.
Took part in oceanographic expeditions to Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Greenland Sea, et cetera Taught oceanography at Leningrad University, Naval Academy and Leningrad Hydrometeorology Institute. 1925 published details of observations made during 1923 expedition with the Murman in book Prilivy na Novoy Zemle (Tides at Novaya Zemlya).
1928-1929 charted currents of the Gulf of Finland. 1932 took part in expedition to Kara Sea on icebreaker Taymyr, during which he observed maelstroms near latitude 78° North. Suggested they were caused by presence of shoals further north, a hypothesis which was confirmed in 1935 by discovery of Ushakov Island and shoals in this area.
1934 member, first non-stop voyage from Vladivostok to Murmansk along Great Northern Sea Route with icebreaker Litka. 1935 member, highlatitude expedition with Sadko’, 1939 member, expedition to the northern Atlantic with Sibiryakov.
