Attended Pavlodar Agriculture School.
1917-1918 member simultaneously of Social-Revolutionary and Social-Democratic Parties. 1922 member, Serapion Brothers literature group, and member, Editor Board, journal “Krasnaya nov”. In 1920's sharply criticized for “political blindness” and classed as “fellow traveller”.
1958 delegation at 1st Constituent Congress Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Writers. 1959 delegation at 3rd Congress of USSR Writers. Deputy Chief Editor, journal “Voprosy yazykoznaniya” (Problems of Linguistics).
Member, Leningrad Oblast Communist Party of the Soviet Union Committee. Prior to Revolution: shop assistant, sailor, com positor, circus juggler, wrestler, sorter in emerald mines, navvy and again compositor. 1918-1920 instructor in Red Army.
1920-1941 Secretary, Lit. Studios, Petrograd, then permenent staff member, journals “Krasnaya nov” and “Novy mir” (New World), and publications houses “Krug” and “Nedr”, etc. Then engaged wholly in literature activities.
1941-1945 worked for Soviet Information Bureau in Kuybyshev, filmed in Tashkent, then frontline observer and reporter. 1945 in Berlin and special correspondent for newspaper “Izvestiya” at Nuremberg Trials.
Board member, USSR Writers’ Union from 1959.
