W. Terry Whalin was born on August 12, 1953, in Huntington, West Virginia, United States. He is a son of Wallace Eugene Whalin, a railroad executive, and Rose (Estill) Whalin.
In 1975, Whalin received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University Bloomington. Later, in 1977, he obtained a Certificate in Bible from Multnomah School of the Bible (present-day Multnomah University). Then, in 1984, W. Terry got a Master of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Arlington.
In 1975, W. Terry began his career as a linguist at Wycliffe Bible Translators, Huntington Beach, California, a post he held till 1985, when he was appointed a managing editor of "In Other Word" at the same organization. Whalin continued to held the position until 1993, when he was made an associate editor of Decision magazine at Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Minneapolis, a post he held till 1994.
Between 1992 and 1994, Whalin was a treasurer at the Evangelical Press Association in Earlysville, Virginia. In 1994, W. Terry became a president and chief executive officer of Whalin & Associates in Colorado Springs, the positions he still holds.
In February 2000, Whalin was appointed a director of Business Development, working for Starwire Corporation until November 2001. The same year, in 2001, W. Terry began working as an acquisitions editor at David C. Cook, an American nonprofit Christian publisher, where he remained until 2003.
During the period from January 2004 till December 2006, Whalin served as a fiction acquisitions editor at the Division of Simon & Schuster, Howard Books. Later, in May 2012, he was made an acquisitions editor at Morgan James Publishing, where he still works.
