(It was not that long ago that African Americans and other...)
It was not that long ago that African Americans and other minorities were excluded from many spheres of American public life. We have seen remarkable progress in recent decades toward Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of beloved community. But this is not only because of the activism and sacrifice of a certain generation of civil rights leaders. It happened because God was on the move. Historian and theologian Charles Marsh partners with veteran activist John Perkins to chronicle God's vision for more equitable and just world. They show how the civil rights movement was one important episode in God's larger movement throughout human history of pursuing justice and beloved community. Perkins reflects on his long ministry and identifies key themes and lessons he has learned, and Marsh highlights the legacy of Perkins's work in American society. Together they show how abandoned places are being restored, divisions are being reconciled, and what individuals and communities are now doing to welcome peace and justice. The God Movement continues yet today. Come, discover your part in the beloved community. There is unfinished work still to do.

(One of America's foremost and best-loved preachers delive...)
One of America's foremost and best-loved preachers delivers here not only 44 new homilies for different occasions but also his secrets for giving an effective sermon. These methods go beyond generalizations and show how to speak meaningfully to a particular audience at a particular point in time. In traveling around the world, Burghardt says he does not "bring" the word of God there. Instead, he believes his role is to discern God's word where it already exists. The all-new homilies are for the liturgical seasons, weddings, feast days, and such miscellaneous occasions as graduations and convocations. Each is scripturally based, relates the biblical events to our own lives today, and incorporates both anecdotes and contemporary world affairs. Each is also "classic Burghardt"--a tight, logical 3-part structure that is also literary, graceful, and passionately concerned with justice. The collection includes an index to all thirteen volumes, making it ideal for clergy of all Christian denominations, for professors of homiletics, and for the many people who read Burghardt's sermons for private inspiration.

(Christian authors of the Late Antique period deliberately...)
Christian authors of the Late Antique period deliberately set themselves the ambitious goal of revolutionizing the world of Latin letters. In this study, John Damon explores how medieval English writers followed Christian writers in the changing classical world who revised their approach to literature to reflect the new spiritual, political and social realities of a Roman society in transformation from a pluralistic polytheism to univocal monotheism. Focusing on the body of early English Christian literature from the arrival of Roman Christianity in England through the period of the Crusades, Damon notes the stark difference in attitude between the earliest works and those that came later, especially in texts on the theme of war. From Bede's "Historia Ecclesiastica", through the works of Alcuin and Aelfric, to the "South English Legendary", Damon traces the subtle evolution in Christianity from the celebration of pacifist saints to the glorification of the new breed of holy warrior who not only died but also fought for Christ.
