Walter James

Background

James was the son of Walter James, 1st Baron Northbourne.

Career

He was elected to the House of Commons for Gateshead in 1874, a seat he held until 1893 when he succeeded his father in the barony and entered the House of Lords. Lord Northbourne married Edith Emeline Mary, daughter of John Newton Lane, in 1868. Their second son the Honorary

Cuthbert James was a Conservative politician.

Lady Northbourne died in 1929.

Achievements

• He attended Oxford University, and won a blue at tennis in 1868. He won his doubles match, but lost the singles to Cambridge University"s Arthur Kinnaird.
