He was a recipient of the Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross, which was awarded to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership by Nazi Germany during World World War World War II During World World War II he was the Adjutant in the 23rd Steamship Panzergrenadier Regiment Norge, 11th Steamship Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Nordland when he was awarded the German Cross in Gold in April 1944 and a posthumous Knight"s Cross in May 1945.
