In 1961 Walter graduated from the University of Buenos Aires and received his Master of Science degree. In 1971 he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Rutgers University.
Walter Schimmerling came to the United States in 1965. From 1965 to 1972 he worked as a Staff scientist at Princeton (New Jersey) University. He served as the Assistant to director of Particle Accelerator at Princeton, 1971-1972. Also he held a position of Staff biophysicist at Lawrence Berkeley (California) Laboratory, 1972-1981 and senior research scientist, 1981-1992.
From 1990 to 1991 Walter Schimmerling was a Visiting senior, scientist at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Since 1992 he is a Chief scientist of Space Life Sciences at division of Universities Space Research Association, Washington. Since 1995 he works as the Head of Program of science space radiation health and radiobiology at National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He is a Contributor of numerous articles to science journals and Associate editor of Radiation Research.
He is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Physical Society and Radiation Research Society.
