Walter Prescott Webb was born on April 3, 1888, in Panola County, Texas, United States. He is a son of Casner P. Webb and Mary Elizabeth Kyle. When he was four, the family moved to Stephens County.
Walter Prescott Webb attended Ranger High School. Later he studied at the University of Texas at Austin where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1915, a Master of Arts degree in 1920 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1932. He also attended the University of Chicago.
Walter Prescott Webb started his career as an instructor at the University of Texas at Austin in 1918. In 1933, he was appointed as a professor of history, holding the position until 1963. Webb also worked as Harkness Lecturer at the University of London in 1939. In 1942, he took up a post of Harmsworth Professor of American History at the University of Oxford and left this post in 1943.
Walter Prescott Webb published his first book The Great Plains: A Study in Institutions and Environment in 1931. Later he published such books as The Texas Rangers: A Century of Frontier Defense, Divided We Stand: The Crisis of a Frontierless Democracy and The Great Frontier. He also was a contributor to periodicals, including Southwestern Historical Quarterly, Scribner’s Magazine, West Texas Historical Association Yearbook, Panhandle-Plains Historical Review, Harper’s Magazine, Mississippi Valley Historical Review, American Historical Review. Webb also was an editor of Southwestern Historical Quarterly. His last book An Honest Preface and Other Essays was published in 1959.

1951Walter Prescott Webb was a member of the Texas State Historical Association where he served as president from 1939 to 1946. He also served as president of the American Historical Association in 1958.
Walter Prescott Webb married Jane Elizabeth Oliphant on September 16, 1916. The marriage produced a daughter. Jane Elizabeth died on June 28, 1960. On December 14, 1961, Webb married Terrell Maverick, the widow of F. Maury Maverick of San Antonio.
