Overs, Walter Henry was born on March 26, 1870 in Harbury, England. Son of John and Sarah (Culley) Overs.

Educated Wolverhampton Technology School, Rochdale Bible School, England. B.Ph., Taylor U., Upland, Indiana, 1899, Master of Arts, 1900. Doctor of Philosophy., Grove City (Pennsylvania) College, 1908.

S.T.D., Hobart College, 1925.

Career

Sent from England as missionary of United Methodist Episcopal Church to West Central Africa, 1893. Discovered 250,000 natives who practiced human sacrifice, slavery and polygamy. Established 35 schools and chs.

Came to the United States on account of ill health, 1898, naturalized citizen, 1904. Pastor various chs. in New York State. Joined Protestant Episcopal Church, 1910.

Rector St. Luke’s Church, Mechanicsburg, New York, 1910, St. Paul’s Church, Wellsboro, 1910-1912, Church of the Ascension, Bradford, Pennsylvania, 1912-1919. Bishop of Liberia, December 18, 1919-November 30, 1925. A general secretary field department of National Council Protestant Episcopal Church, 1925-1928.

Later rector Grace Church, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
