He graduated from the College of railway transport in Slavyansk, Donetsk region (1968), Odessa Theological Seminary (1972), Leningrad Theological Academy (1976).
In 1974 he became a monk. Bishop of Irkutsk and Chita (1980-1982). Archbishop (since 1985), Metropolitan (since 1988) of Voronezh and Lipetsk (1982-2003). Editor-in-chief of the journal "Historical Bulletin" (Voronezh, 1999-2003). Since May 2003, Metropolitan of Astana and Alma-ATA, head of the Metropolitan district in Kazakhstan.
There was a rise in Church life in the Voronezh diocese when Mefody came. Several times increased the number of temples opened monasteries (including Alekseevskiy Akatov, Spaso-preobrazhenski Tolshevsky), restored the Voronezh Theological Seminary, resumed publication of the "Voronezh diocesan Bulletin".
