Gibson was born on March 31, 1932 in Columbus, Ohio, United States; the son of Walter Samuel Gibson and Grace Buena (Wheeler) Gibson.
Gibson received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1957. Three years later he earned his Master of Arts degree from the same university. In 1969, Walter was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Harvard University.
Gibson served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He began his career as an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University in 1966. Five years later he took a position of an associate professor at the same university and held it for seven years.
Also Walter served as a chairman at Case Western Reserve University in 1971-1979. Then in 1978, he was appointed a Mellon Professor of the Humanities at that university. Since 1997 Gibson has been a professor emeritus at Case Western Reserve University.
