Goforth was born on February 13, 1932 in Wentzville, Missouri, United States; the son of Harold Franklin Goforth and Mary Elder (Reid) Goforth.
Goforth received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1954 and a Master of Arts in 1963 from the University of Missouri. Also in 1968, he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university.
Goforth began his career as a professor at Iowa Wesleyan College (nowadays Iowa Wesleyan University) in 1964. Four years later he took the same position at the University of Missouri.
Also Wayne served as a director of Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center at the United States Fish and Wildllife Service from 1973 to 1980. Then in 1980, he was appointed a forest environment research director at the same agency. Three years later Wayne became a research unit supervisor at the United States Fish and Wildllife Service.
In 1994, Goforth held a position of a chief of the cooperative research division at National Biological Service. Since 1997 he has been a research liaison officer at the United States Fish and Wildllife Service.
On March 19, 1963 Wayne Goforth married Prudence Jean Osborn. They have two children.
