Wentworth Miller, in full Wentworth Earl Miller III, is a critically acclaimed British-American actor and screenwriter. He gained prominence after he starred as Michael Scofield in the Fox series Prison Break. Wentworth also appeared in such TV-series, as The Flash and Batwoman, among others.
Background
Ethnicity:
Miller's father is of African-American, Jamaican, German, and English descent, while his mother is of Rusyn, Swedish, French, Dutch, Syrian, and Lebanese ancestry. Some sources also state that he has Jewish roots.
Wentworth Miller was born on June 2, 1972, in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, to Wentworth E. Miller II, a lawyer and teacher, and Roxann (Palm) Miller, a special education teacher. Wentworth has two younger sisters, Gillian and Leigh.
Education
When Miller turned a year old, his family moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York City, where his father, Wentworth E. Miller II, became an assistant district attorney.
Wentworth studied at Midwood High School in Brooklyn, New York City, where he was a member of Sing!, an annual musical production. Later, Miller continued his education at Quaker Valley Senior High School in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. During his time at the educational establishment, he was involved in the school newspaper.
In 1990, Miller finished Quaker Valley Senior High School and enrolled in Princeton University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1995. During his time at Princeton, he performed with a cappella group, the Princeton Tigertones, and was a member of the Quadrangle Club and the Colonial Club. Besides, he was a cartoonist for the school paper.
It's worth mentioning, that it was during his time at Princeton, that Miller realized he was interested in performing in front of big and small audiences.
In 1995, after graduation from Princeton University, Miller moved to California. That same year, he was hired by a small company that made movies for television. About a year and a half later, he realized that he had unconsciously moved to Los Angeles to be an actor. He then decided to quit his job at the production company even after his employee at the production company had offered him another stable job position.
Unfortunately for Wentworth, breaking into the industry was a tough job for him. He worked as a temp at several production companies before ending up working as a temp for his former employee's production office. It wasn't too long before Wentworth started landing guest roles on shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997), ER (1994) and Popular (1999).
It was in 2002, that Wentworth received his first starring role as introverted David Scott in ABC's mini-series Dinotopia. He continued appearing in a few minor television roles and, in 2003, he co-starred in The Human Stain, assuming the role of the younger version of the Anthony Hopkins character, Coleman Silk. This happened to be his breakthrough role. Despite the fact, that the film didn't fare well in movie theaters, it was well-received by viewers and critics, further catapulting Wentworth to bigger stardom.
The same year, in 2003, Wentworth appeared in a minor role in the film Underworld, playing a doctor and friend of the character Michael Corvin. He also guest-starred in the series finale of CBS' Joan of Arcadia (2003), as Ryan Hunter, a charming yet sinister man who revealed to Joan that he also spoke to God. It was reported that his character would be Joan's greatest challenge, but in May, CBS decided to cancel the show, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.
In 2005, Wentworth appeared in the pilot of Ghost Whisperer before eventually starring on the FOX network's Prison Break. Wentworth played the role of Michael Scofield, a character helping his brother, Lincoln Burrows, escape death row after being found guilty of a crime he did not commit. He starred alongside such actors, as Dominic Purcell, Amaury Nolasco and Robert Knepper. Prison Break became an instant hit and Wentworth secured a spot among viewers as one of the hottest up-and-coming actors around. The TV-series was finished in 2009 after four seasons, but a new nine-episode fifth season was released on April 4, 2017, with Miller reprising his role.
It's also worth noting, that Miller appeared in two of Mariah Carey's music videos, "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together" as Mariah's love interest.
Later, the actor guest-starred in the Season 11 premiere of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Detective Nate Kendall. He also appeared in Resident Evil: Afterlife, the fourth film in the commercially successful Resident Evil film series, based on the video game series of the same name.
In 2014, Miller became part of the cast of The CW superhero series, The Flash, assuming the role of Leonard Snart (Captain Cold). Wentworth made his first appearance in the fourth episode of the first season and reprised his role on Legends of Tomorrow. The actor left Legends of Tomorrow as a series regular at the end of the first season. However, he signed a contract with Warner Bros. TV to continue acting as Snart simultaneously on multiple shows in the Arrowverse.
In 2020, Wentworth said that he was no longer interested in playing straight roles for film or television. He also added, that he would not act in the sixth season of Prison Break if it was produced.
As for his work as a screenwriter, Miller wrote the screenplay for the film Stoker, as well as a prequel to Stoker, Uncle Charlie. The film was released in 2013 and received generally positive reviews from critics. Later, Miller acted as a screenwriter for the 2016 horror film The Disappointments Room. However, the film received poor reviews from critics.
Wentworth Miller is a well-known British-American actor and screenwriter, who achieved recognition for his starring role in the TV-series Prison Break. He is also known for his roles in The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow TV-series.
In 2015, Miller received the Saturn Award for Best Guest Starring Role on Television, for The Flash. In addition, during his lifetime, he received many nominations for different awards, including a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV-Series - Drama, for Prison Break (2005); a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actor on Television, for Prison Break (2005); a Gold Derby Award nomination for Breakthrough Performer of the Year, for Prison Break (2006); an International Online Cinema Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, for Stoker (2013) and others. Religion
Miller's views about the world imply he's non-religious, as the only place he talks about his faith is in the context of his profession. He once said: "There has to be a measure of faith. That's what this business is all about: trusting in something that may never show up, that you have no concrete proof of."
Politics
Miller is non-political, though he does comment on race in America.
Views
Initially, Miller denied he was a man of non-traditional sexual orientation. However, in 2013, he came out as gay. His sexual orientation became clear, when he declined an invitation to attend the Saint Petersburg International Film Festival because he felt "deeply troubled" by the Russian government's treatment of its gay citizens, citing the Russian LGBT propaganda law.
Miller was involved in ManKind Project, a global network of nonprofit organizations focused on modern male initiation, self-awareness, and personal growth. He stated, that the project helped him learn about brotherhood, sisterhood, and being part of a community.
On October 17, 2016, Active Minds, a mental health charity, announced that it was going to make Miller its ambassador.
Quotations:
"You have to love what you do and you have to need it like you need air. And there's nothing else that would give me the same degree of satisfaction as acting, which is why I can't walk away from it."
"Confidence is at the root of so many attractive qualities - a sense of humor, a sense of style, a willingness to be who you are no matter what anyone else might think or say."
"You only cry for help if you believe there is help to cry for."
"I have very high expectations of myself. I'm a very competitive person but competitive with myself. I want to be the best that I can be and if that means that I'm eventually better than everyone else then so be it."
"I'm hoping that what I am or what I'm not ethnically doesn't limit me in anyone else's eyes. I guarantee you it doesn't in mine."
"My experience is that I find myself having to constantly define myself to others, day-in, day-out. The quote that's helped me the most through that is from Toni Morrison's "Beloved" where she says, "Definitions belong to the definers, not the defined" - so I find myself defining myself for other people lest I be defined by others and stuck into some box where I don't particularly belong."
"Unfortunately, I'm allergic to all animals and even some people."
"I feel extremely lucky, extremely grateful, and a little bittersweet, too."
"My character in 'Prison Break' needs to be formidable. In reality, I'm not very tough at all."
"A great book provides escapism for me. The artistry and the creativity in a story are better than any drugs."
"My definition of cool is finding your own definition of cool and not necessarily taking your lead from what other people tell you or from what you might read from magazines or see on TV."
"Michael Scofield is someone everyone can relate to, but nobody would want to be in his shoes."
"'Prison Break' is so far-fetched, I had to make viewers believe that Michael is capable of making the impossible possible."
