Served in the Indian Forest Department in Assam and North-Western Provinces till 1889. Last appointment in India, Director of Imperial Forest School, Dehra Dun, and Conservator of Forests, North-Western Provinces. President of the Royal English Arboricultural Society, 1904.
Honourable Editor Journal of Forestry, 1906: a member of the Departmental Committee of the Board of Agriculture, Ireland, for reafforesting Ireland, 1907-1908.
