Wilhelmus Jacobus Witteman was born on December 12, 1933, in Monster, South Holland, Netherlands. He is the son of Jacobus Wilhelmus and Alida Gertruda (van Wetten) Witteman.
Wilhelmus Witteman learned a trade of mechanical engineer at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, in 1958. He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1963.
From 1958 till 1960 Wilhelmus Witteman was a Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland, College Park. During the next nine years, he worked as a Research scientist at Philips, Eindhoven, the Netherlands. In 1969 he became a Professor of Physics at the University of Twente, the Netherlands.
In 1976 Witteman became a member of Board directors of Fundamental Research of Matter, Utrecht, and a member of the executive board in 1985.
