Ordained to the Methodist Episcopal ministry, he held pastorates in Kansas, in Spokane and Seattle, Washington, in Dubuque, Iowa, and in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was president of Upper Iowa University in 1905-1909 and thereafter president of Wesleyan University. He received many honorary degrees.
