Ordained Baptist minister, 1904. Principal Public school, Saratoga, North Carolina, 1905-1906. Principal Cuban-American College (mission school), Havana, Cuba, 1909-1912, also pastor English-speaking portion Calvary Baptist Church there.

Professor church history, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Seminary Hill, Texas, 1913-1946. Research professor in Baptist history since 1946. Also stated pulpit supply various chs.

Chairman faculty, School of Theology of the Seminary. Ten times elected moderator Tarrent County (Texas) Association.
