Entered Leeds Museum as Curator, 1884. Senior Assistant, Natural History Department of the Edinburgh Museum, 1888. Engaged in natural history work generally, especially birds and their migrations.
Elected Member of British Association Committee on Bird Migration in 1884 and prepared final Reports (five) of the inquiry, was awarded the special thanks of the Association. President of the Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union, 1905. Vice president Royal Physical Society, Edinburgh, 1905-1907.
Honourable Member of American Ornithologists’ Union, and of the Ornithological Societies of Vienna and Buda - Pest, etc. Keeper of the Natural History Department, Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh, since 1906.
Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Fellow of the Linnean Society.
