He studied medicine at Street George"s Hospital Medical School, his studies were interrupted by military service with the French Army in the War of 1870.
After his military service Ewart qualified as a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of London in 1871 and Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac in 1872. He gained his Bachelor of Medicine in 1877 from Cambridge University. He worked at Street George"s Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1881 and Doctor of Medicine in 1882.
He retired in 1907.
