Hoskins graduated from Chicago High School in 1879.
Hoskins began his career as a researcher at analytical chemical laboratory of professor G. A. Mariner in 1880. Five years later he became a partner of Mariner & Hoskins. Since 1890 William was a president of Mariner & Hoskins, Inc.
Hoskins was an associate member of Naval Consulting Board in 1917 and member of sub-committee in charge of Chicago office. He was also a member of advisory committee of the United States Bureau of Mines.
On December 8, 1885 William Hoskins married Ada May Mariner. They had four children.
