Studied at University of Aberdeen (Master of Arts 1863, Doctor of Laws 1908). University of Edinburgh (Doctor of Medicine 1865).
Joined Army, 1865; served South Africa in the Zulu campaign, and operations against Sekukuni, 1878-1879, and was present at the attack and capture of Sekukuni’s stronghold (despatches, medal with clasp). Commanded Bearer Company in the Transvaal campaign of 1881. Retired 1892.
Re-employed at the War Office, 1899-1901, during the Boer War, as Assistant Director Army Medical Service.
Companion of the Bath and promoted Colonel, 1902.
