William Albert Keener was born on March 10, 1856 in Augusta, Georgia, United States. His parents died when he was very young and he was brought up in the home of a married sister.
The public schools of Augusta gave Keener the preparation necessary to enter Emory College in Oxford, Georgia. Matriculating at fourteen, he was a Bachelor of Arts with distinction at eighteen (1874). After working in a law office in Augusta for some months he entered the Harvard Law School. In 1877 he received the law degree, but he went on with a post-graduate course for another year.
In 1879-1883 Keener practiced the law in New York and afterwards entered the profession of teaching and made in it a notable career for close upon twenty years. For five years he was an assistant professor of law at Harvard. In 1888 he was promoted to the distinguished Story Professorship. In 1890 he was appointed to a professorship of law in Columbia College as a preliminary step to his elevation to the deanship of the Columbia Law School in 1891. The next year he was further honored with the Kent Professorship of law.
His publications added measurably to his prestige and standing. Two volumes, A Selection of Cases on the Law of Quasi-Contracts, appeared in 1888 and 1889. In 1893 he published A Treatise on the Law of Quasi-Contracts. During the years from 1894 to 1896 he completed A Selection of Cases on Equity Jurisdiction, in three volumes; and in 1896, Selections on the Elements of Jurisprudence. In 1898 appeared A Selection of Cases on the Law of Contracts, in two volumes, and the next year, A Selection of Cases on the Law of Private Corporations, also in two volumes. The eminently scholarly, systematic, and exhaustive work done in the preparation of these standard volumes stands out conspicuously because at the time they were published modern case-book production was as yet in its early stages.
In the autumn of 1901, Keener gave up his office as dean, and the following year resigned his professorship to accept appointment to the supreme court of New York, to complete the unexpired term of Justice Beach, deceased. In the next election he was one of the unsuccessful candidates for the full term. Thus his career as a judge was brief and on the whole uneventful. He returned now to the private practice of law which he had left twenty years before and continued in it, with only inconspicuous success, through the remaining years of his life.
