William Kent, American engineer. Member New Jersey State Commision on Pollution of Streams, 1898-1899. Has taken out over 20 patents on weighing machinery, water-tube boilers, smokeless furnaces, etc.

Kent, William was born on March 5, 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of James and Janet (Scott) Kent.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Central High School, Philadelphia, 1868, A.M., 1873. Mechanical Engineering, Stevens Institute Technology, 1876. (Doctor of Science, Syracuse University, 1905).

Career

Editor of America Manufacturer and Iron World, Pittsburgh, 1877-1879. Held positions as mechanic engineer and superintendent in iron and steel works, steam boiler business and Torsion balance scale factory, 1879-1890. Consulting engineer (office practice), since 1890.

Associate editor Engineering News, 1895-1903. Dean L. C. Smith College Applied Science, Syracuse University, 1903-1908. Editor Industrial Engineering, 1910-1914.

Lecturer steam engineering, Newark Technology School, 1888-1895. Has also lectured at Purdue, Brooklyn Institute, Franklin Institute (Philadelphia), Worcester Polytechnic Institute, West Virginia University, University of Illinois, Cornell, Stevens Institute, etc.
