Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

("The subject-matter of the ensuing history is comprised i...)
"The subject-matter of the ensuing history is comprised in the fifty years that intervene between the repulse of the invasion of Greece by Xerxes and the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War the interval therefore between the closing events of the history of Herodotus and the opening of that of Thucydides. A certain overlap is admitted at either end for the sake of more distinctly marking the connection with the two great continuous histories. The political events that occupied these years, though anything but unimportant, were yet, even in antiquity, not made the subject of any special narrative, the more momentous struggles and ware of the adjacent periods withdrawing attention from them. The quarrels that occurred within this period and led to open conflicts were, though all under a main drifting influence, short and disconnected; and it may therefore be considered as, on the whole, an oasis of peace in the midst of surrounding devastation and disorder. But it was within this period that all the germs were deposited which sprang into such rank vitality afterwards..." - William Watkiss Lloyd Contents: The Results of Salamis. Lloyd was born at Homerton, then in Middlesex, and educated at Newcastle-under-Lyme High School.
At the age of 15 he entered a family tobacco business in London, where he remained until his retirement in 1864. He died in London. The work for which he is best known is The Age of Pericles (1875), which is notable for its scholarship and appreciation of its period, but hampered by a difficult and at times obscure style. He wrote also:
Xanthian Marbles (1845)
Critical Essays upon Shakespeare"s Plays (1875)
The History of Sicily to the Athenian War with elucidations of the Sicilian odes of Pindar (1872)
Panics and their Panaceas (1869)
An edition of Much Ado about Nothing, "now first published in fully recovered metrical form" (1884) – the author held that all the plays were originally written throughout in blank verse.
A number of manuscripts remain unpublished, the most important of which have been bequeathed to the British Museum, including:
A Further History of Greece
The Century of Michael Angelo
The Neo-Platonists.
The work by which William Watkiss Lloyd is best known is The Age of Pericles, characterized by soundness of scholarship, great learning, and a thorough appreciation of the period with which it deals, but rendered unattractive by a difficult and at times obscure style.
