Lieutenant- Colonel 1858. Colonel, 1863; the regiment served through the Indian Mutiny from 25 May 1857 to 8 July 1861. Promoted Lieutenant-Colonel for service in the field.
Commanded the 5th Fusiliers at the relief and capture of Lucknow. In command of the Fort Alumbagh when attacked by the enemy, and on the left village when the place was attacked on the 28 February 1858. Served throughout the Indian Campaign of 1858-1859, including the action Dundekera.
Mentioned several times in despatches. Jubilee medal and clasp. Decorated: Indian Mutiny medal,with clasps for “relief of Lucknow’’and “Lucknow.”. C. B. 1858; late Lieutenant-Colonel in command of 5th (Northumberland) Fusiliers; late Gentleman-atArms.
