McCormack entered politics as member for Cairns in the Queensland Legislative Assembly at the election of 1912, a seat he held until his retirement from politics in 1930. McCormack died in Brisbane on 21 November 1947 with his funeral proceeding from his Annerley residence to the Toowong Cemetery.
