Educated Saint Charles College, Missouri, 1880-1882, Central College, Fayette, Missouri, 1882-1885. Doctor of Divinity, Emory and Henry College, Virginia, 1902. Doctor of Laws, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Centenary College, Shreveport, Louisiana, Central College, Fayette, Missouri, all 1921.
Prior to his episcopal service, the Review McMurry also was notable as a Methodist Pastor and church official William F. married Mission Francis B. Davis in 1888.
He was then educated at Saint Charles College in Saint Charles, Missouri and at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri.
In 1887 Review West.F. McMurry was admitted on trial in the Missouri Annual Conference. He was appointed Pastor at Saint Joseph, Missouri for three years.
He next was appointed to Macon (1890-1894) and Richmond (1894-1898). He was appointed Presiding Elder of the Saint Joseph District (1898-1901).
He then transferred to the Saint Louis Annual Conference where he was appointed Presiding Elder of the Saint Louis District (1901-1902) before being appointed Pastor of Centenary Methodist Church in Saint Louis (1902-1906).
His final appointment before his election to the Episcopacy was as Corresponding Secretary of the Board of Church Extension of the Mechanical Engineering Church, South (1906-1918). Bishop McMurry received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from the Central Methodist College. McMurry University in Abilene, Texas was named in his honor.
